Repair or Replace Your Water Heater? How to Decide

A water heater repair makes sense in some cases and is wasted effort in others. These questions help you decide.

How old is it?

The age is on the data plate, and the date is often coded in the serial number. Tank heaters often last roughly 8–12 years. Past that, parts and the tank itself are more likely to fail.

Is the tank leaking?

A leak from the tank body means the inner tank has failed and the heater needs to be replaced. A leak from a fitting, valve or pipe connection can often be repaired.

How often has it been repaired?

Repeated repairs, a new element followed by a thermostat, then a valve, suggest the unit is wearing out.

Is it keeping up?

If your household has grown or you run out of hot water, a larger tank or a tankless unit may suit you better.

Gas or electric, tank or tankless

Switching fuel types or going tankless can require gas line, venting or electrical changes. Have a plumber assess the work. See water heater repair and replacement.
