Frozen Pipes in San Angelo: How to Prevent and What to Do
San Angelo is warm most of the year, but it does see freezing nights. Pipes in attics, outside walls, garages and crawl spaces are the first to freeze.
Request a plumberBefore a freeze
Disconnect and drain garden hoses and cover outdoor faucets. Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warm air reaches the pipes. Let faucets drip slightly on the coldest nights. Insulate exposed pipes in garages, attics and crawl spaces.
Know your main shut-off
Find the main water shut-off valve and make sure it turns before winter. If a pipe bursts, shutting off the water quickly limits the damage.
If a pipe freezes
If water stops flowing at a faucet during a freeze, a pipe may be frozen. Open the faucet, then warm the pipe slowly with a hair dryer or warm towels. Never use an open flame.
If a pipe bursts
Shut off the main water valve, turn off the water heater, open faucets to drain the system and move belongings away from the water. Then call a plumber. See our emergency plumber page.
Vacant and rural properties
Second homes, cabins and outbuildings are at the most risk because nobody notices a problem. Shut off and drain the water if a property will sit empty during a freeze.
